Aléa is an experimental design studio and material research lab based in Paris. Miriam Josi (CH) and Stella Lee Prowse (AUS) co-founded Aléa in 2021 after completing their Master's degree at ENSCI-les Ateliers. Their work explores growth, degradation, and waste, aiming to develop regenerative manufacturing methods while celebrating the beauty of the process. Situated at the intersection of design, art, biology, and agriculture, Aléa's practice blurs the boundaries between these disciplines. Aléa’s mission is to establish a deeper relationship between the natural environment and the built environment by designing autonomous systems adapted to each location for a post-fossil future. Their goal is to develop a critical approach to biodesign to avoid a trajectory of exploitation and control, imagining new ways of working that interact, adapt, and share with non-humans, holistically.
